There's a moral to the story

Off the Normal Book Track

Every now and then… I am called to write something like this. God calls me. He really does. I don’t know who will read this. I hope some of you will.

Jonah (4 chapters in the Bible)

By Elizabeth Ajamie-Boyer 12-5-2025

God told Jonah to go to Nineveh, a very horrible place… I imagine the city was awful, not unlike Las Vegas… Prostitution, gambling, too much drinking/drugs.

Jonah said no. He hated those people, but God loved them. God wanted Jonah to deliver a message: REPENT or the entire city would be destroyed.

Do you know what happened? Jonah ran away. He avoided the bad place. So God let a big fish, maybe a whale shark, swallow him up. Jonah repented, which means he told God he was sorry for disobeying him. But God left Jonah there for three days… in the belly of the really big fish, until finally He let the creature barf Jonah up onto the beach only a little way from Nineveh.

Imagine what poor Jonah looked like. All slimy, all gooey. His clothes, his skin bleached by the fish’s stomach fluids. Gross, right?

Jonah still hated Nineveh. He still didn’t want Nineveh to exist. But he marched into the middle of the city where he found the leaders. He gave them God’s message: repent or the entire place would be blasted off the face of the earth.

What happened, do you suppose? Surprisingly, the leaders believed him. They called the entire city to repentance to God.

God spared them.

But Jonah was angry. He didn’t want them spared. He wanted them all dead.

But that’s another story.

God spares people who turn to him. That’s this story’s happy ending. The word repent means to turn from evil back to God. So easy that most people won’t do it. But what about you?

For God loved the people of this world so much that He gave His only Son, Jesus Christ, that whoever believes in Him will be saved. John 3:16

I’ll write something Christmas-y in a couple weeks. If you don’t want to get the blog, please let me know. Also let me know if you enjoy my writing. I love to hear from you.
