Monsoons in the desert. Again. They are a marvelous thing. The air gets sultry, hot. Taking a breath is difficult. As the day wanes, the wind begins rushing across the desert. The dust rises from the dreadfully dry ground. A haboob. Or a dust storm if you’re old fashioned. The rain usually follows. Thunder roars, lightning flashes, not necessarily in that order, then rain… Sweet smell of dampness, desert, creosote! Rain! Thank you, Lord!
That was last night. That’s how I went to sleep. The sound of rain pounded on our garage roof, lulling me into sweet relief.
This morning? Pretty dry, but degrees cooler still. I got to walk the doggo in below 90* weather. Muggy… but still cooler. There was a nice breeze. Such an incredible comfort. There are beautiful things about the desert southwest. Especially when the air is clean. Especially when it isn’t 110*.

TJ and I only shake our head when the weather guys say it’s hot at 90*. I suppose it is if you aren’t used to 105*. Also, I guess they should be warning those Minnesota yokels not to climb a mountain after 9 a.m. in Phoenix. Hiking isn’t a great idea either. You aren’t acclimated to the heat. Stay home so you don’t die. Especially don’t take your kids or pets out in this pizza oven. Come back in November to climb and hike. Seriously.
TOPIC Change: We were in Payson on Saturday. Payson is above 5000 feet. The temps were still pretty warm at around 100*. But there are trees to stand under for shade. The evening temps drop pretty nicely. This trip was for the Payson Book Festival, that only a few of you took advantage of. I don’t know. 115 or 100*? Why would you stay in the Valley of the SUN on a Saturday? Especially when there’s this great event 90 minutes to the northeast of you? If you left the valley, and came to the event, I missed you. We aren’t the only authors there. There are like 81 of us. Murder mysteries, science fiction, kids books, dramas, romance, history, historical fiction. There’s definitely something for everyone. There’s almost something for everyone right at our table.
